Spotlight Profile: George C. Keefe - "The Encasement Guy"
George C. Keefe is the CEO and founder of GLOBAL Encasement Inc. (GEI), an international, Pro-Planet corporation that provides green coating solutions for tough building challenges.
Also known as Encasement Guy, Keefe is a consultant, lecturer, author and technical writer. His expertise stems from over 40 years of hands-on experience with the coatings, painting, specialty contracting, indoor environmental remediation, risk management and specification writing.
Mr. Keefe founded, GLOBAL Encasement, Inc. (GEI), a pro-planet company in 1994. He developed green encasement coating systems for application over asbestos and lead based paint at a time when there was the worldwide backlash against the use of asbestos as a building material. He often found himself on jobsites where there was an overreaction to asbestos, even though the useful building material was in good shape doing what it was originally intended to do. He found the same with Lead-Based Paint and solid PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls) that are also major health issues when released into the environment. He knew all these materials and others could be easily and safely in-place managed with tested green coatings.
Drawing from his experience in dealing with toxic/hazardous building materials, Keefe authored the book “Just Encase They Think You’re Stupid“, a guide for Managing Asbestos and Lead-Based Paint. He has also published numerous technical papers on applications for encasement green coatings, waterproofing and roofing issues.
Mr. Keefe is considered one of the pioneers and leading experts on “In-Place Management” as a primary alternative to removal and replacement. He believes and has consistently proven that not only hazardous materials such as Asbestos, Lead-Based Paint & solid PCB’s can be safely managed in-place but many other building components including roofing can be restored instead of being removed and replaced.
This proven method of restoration and in-place management is sound logic and backed up by science. Mr. Keefe knows that not only does recycling building components stop the unnecessary generation, transportation and storage of unwanted waste but also turn these surfaces green, sustainable and often better than new.
On March 11, 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was damaged by the tsunami that resulted from the disastrous 8.9-magnitude Tohoku earthquake, emitting a large amount of radiation due to a hydrogen explosion. Mr. Keefe was contacted, flown into Tokyo, and asked to evaluate the situation and present viable solutions. He met with the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) management at one of the TEPCO facilities just outside the evacuation zone in Northern Japan. They did several demonstrations presenting GEI products that locked down and helped contain the hazardous debris with their Green coatings. Those GEI coatings were approved for use and helped minimize the potential future exposure while containing the hazardous, radioactive debris.
On another notable project, Mr. Keefe took the lead on encasing 500,000 sf of asbestos spray-on fireproofing on structural steel in the World Trade Center loading docks of the Twin Towers - NYC.
GEI has held a U.S. Government GSA Worldwide Service contract for over 17 years and has completed thousands of projects with satisfied customers all over the world.
