Mega Storms Of The Future Are Mauling Cities Right Now

Two buildings standing side by side on the seashore, then a recent mega storm hits. One building has the roof shredded and takes on significant damage as driving winds cause severe water penetration through both the roof and walls, while the second building, with roof and walls completely sealed, holds up and sustains no damage.

The biggest difference is the second building was completely sealed with a protective coating that is designed and proven for just that circumstance. Having no seams, gaps or holes in the building exterior, being sealed with a continuous membrane prevents penetration of strong wind uplift tearing off building roofs and other outside components, while also fending off driving rain that cause extensive property damage. This story will be repeated as storms increase and action is either taken or not - to apply the best defensive coatings protecting buildings, people and their contents.

With increasing extreme and violent weather events becoming stronger, defensive products are needed to protect buildings and their occupants against the costly destruction caused by typical and mega storms. Category 5 storms used to be the strongest weather events. As superstorms become more prevalent, there may be a call for a new classification of Category 6. Rain and cyclone maximum speed intensity will increase doing greater property damage, deteriorating the outside of a buildings much faster than in the past.

FEMA is recommending that buildings in the path of potential flooding should waterproof the lower floor to prepare for such upcoming events. This can’t be accomplished with typical paints. The outside of a building is best served with a protective coating designed and proven to hold up on a roof, where the most brutal attacks from natural elements take place. Having all surfaces fully sealed with the right industrial, protective coating will prevent tear out and replacement of building components that would otherwise be damaged and destroyed by storms and flood waters. And by right industrial, protective coating, I mean a coating that is already approved and has a demonstrated track record for waterproofing surfaces, such as roofing, is needed for the tough challenges ahead.

Better building protection is needed as storms increase in intensity and frequency and Regulation may be the key to defending the outside of buildings. Requiring stronger protection that completely seals the outside of a building surface, preventing the penetration from mauling winds and rain may be the best hope for limiting property and personal damage.
