Ilocos, The Philippines - Lecture to 1,000+ Architect’s on Green Coatings Encasement

Turning surfaces solar reflective while stopping the generation of harmful waste.


I recently gave a lecture in Ilocos, Philippines to over 1,000 architects on the benefits of Green Coating Encasement versus removal & replacement. This included what exactly are green coatings, what defines encasement, and how they are both beneficial in protecting people, buildings and the planet. It also included how to prolong the life of buildings and roofs, how to turn surfaces solar reflective and safe in-place management of solid hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint and PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls). The presentation made it clear how all of this is simply accomplished with the same protective green coatings.

Many of the topics discussed were of substantial interest, although some were treated with more curiosity than others. There was overall agreement on the scientific fact that man is a large contributor to global warming/climate change and, that with everyone working together, we can help reverse some of those negative effects.


A major concern is the fact that we generate, transport and store so much harmful waste that greatly contributes to damaging CO2 emissions. Overall pollution was an important issue because the effects were all around us and easily seen, even with just unsightly roadside garbage. We all agreed we need to work together with simple solutions to decrease unnecessary and unwanted trash.


Being able to minimize the generation of waste was an important topic of Green coating encasement. I spoke that one of the ways we can accomplish this is by restoring buildings surfaces, including roofs, and not removing them and generating all that unwanted waste.


Unnecessary roof removal and replacement is a large generator of harmful waste. In the past, roofs were falsely perceived at the end of their life cycle and torn off requiring unneeded replacement. Now, with the simple application of the right green coatings, these same roofs can be restored making them sustainable and better than new. Also, there is no need to store waste where it decomposes into the atmosphere.


Being in the Philippines, a country that is hot year-round, another topic of interest was helping minimize the pulling down of heat onto dark surfaces and the results of that.


I brought to everyone’s attention that there are two large man-made dark surfaces pulling down heat and contributing to global warming/climate change, which are the roadways and roofs.


Roofs are the surfaces that can be quickly improved and turned solar reflective with the easy application of the right green, solar reflective coatings. Dark colored roofs, which are predominant in the Philippines, unavoidably pull down large amounts of heat causing more energy use to cool buildings. Those dark surfaces also negatively affect people’s well-being by needlessly creating hotter indoor environments.

Dark colored roofs were an area that the architects were in agreement they could make an immediate difference. By recommending and specifying the installation of solar reflective, green roof coatings for both new and old roofs, their clients and occupants would realize energy/cost reductions and increased overall comfort. This was especially true on sizable industrial and commercial roofs with large surface areas. All buildings could quickly be turned from heat absorbing surfaces into ones that reflected heat, staying cooler and saving money/energy.


It was easily understood that addressing these challenges by using solar reflective green coatings encasement would help stop the generation of waste while restoring roofs and other building surfaces. In addition, this would aid and offset the harmful warming effects of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
